Lighting Design - An Introduction

What We Do

We’re ZaZacorp. An independent lighting consultancy, we specialise in designing and supplying beautiful and functional lighting schemes for both domestic and commercial properties. We’ve been producing creative lighting designs throughout the UK and Europe for over 20 years now. This means that we’ll work closely with you throughout the process to ensure that as a home-owner, interior designer or architect, the lighting scheme that you want is the lighting scheme that you get. We also source our products from many of Europe’s leading suppliers and design our own to boot, giving you plenty of choice when it comes to deciding on the exact look and budget for your scheme. Our services include client consultation; lighting design; product specification; plans; lighting supply; site visits; commissioning and support.

Step 1. Fee Proposal

To ensure that we can work to your budget and within your timescales, the first thing we like to do is chat with you about your lighting project. The aim of this discussion is for you to give us as much information as possible about the spaces to be lit, including: room style, ceiling height, elevations and furniture layout. For this we’ll need architectural drawings, preferably at 1:50. We can then provide you with a quote to supply a full lighting design package, completely tailored to your project. Our fee proposal will include for one set of revised drawings. Any subsequent revisions will be chargeable - please see the Pricing tab below for details.

Once you’re happy with this fee proposal, we’ll require a 50% pre-payment in order to start work on your scheme. We’ll then set up an initial meeting for you with one of our experienced lighting designers.

To arrange a fee proposal, please us at [email protected] or on .

Step 2. Initial Meeting

The initial meeting with one of our designers can be held on site or in our studio, whichever you prefer. The aim of this meeting is for you to tell us about any specific requirements you have, regarding lighting for art or sculpture for example. Most importantly, it’s for you to tell us how you want your space to feel. Ideally, to ensure you receive the exact lighting scheme you want, the design should be carried out prior to your project’s electrical first fix.

Step 3. Design & Specification

After our initial meeting, we’ll provide you with a full set of Auto-CAD drawings, a specification and a schedule detailing all luminaires, fittings and transformers. We’ll also include design notes and positioning details. Where required, we’ll include dimmer or scene control options for maximum flexibility. For an additional cost (please see the Pricing tab below), we can also provide you with a Dialux lighting calculation - creating a 3D, real time visualisation of how your lighting will look once it’s installed. Or, if you’d prefer, we can set up realistic scene creation for you to view in our studio.

Once you receive the design package from us, you can use it for tender and installation purposes and we’ll be on hand to answer any questions you or your contractor may have. Typically, you’ll receive the design package 15 working days after we have received all the relevant information from you. For smaller jobs a quicker turnaround may be possible, just ask us.

Step 4. Ongoing Site Visits & Revisions

We’ll liaise with your electrical contractor to ensure the installation of your lighting scheme goes as smoothly as possible, and we’ll always be on hand to provide technical help. If further site visits are needed prior to commissioning, our designer will be happy to do this. These may be chargeable and this would be at our normal hourly rate – please see the Pricing tab below for details. Any revisions required will also usually be charged at our hourly rate.

Step 5. Commissioning

Once all lighting has been installed, we’ll visit site to ensure everything’s been fitted to specification and is exactly the way you want it. We’ll also be on hand to help with scene set up and control.

On-site commissioning will be charged separately where fittings have not been purchased from ZaZacorp.

After your project is completed, we’ll provide you with a whole year’s worth of support. Beyond that, we’ll always be available to help you with anything you need whenever we can.

One year aftercare support will be charged separately where fittings have not been purchased from ZaZacorp.

Building Regs & Energy Efficiency

If you’re unsure how much low energy lighting you’ll need, just ask us and we can provide you with this information. For example, a new build requires a minimum of 75% of fixed lights on a project to meet a minimum efficacy requirement of 45 lumens per 1 watt usage. This deems that product to be a low energy product.

You can be sure that all our lighting schemes comply fully with current building regulations. We’ll provide a Part L compliancy pack with your lighting schedule for you to give to your building control officer. This compliancy pack ensures that the goods we have supplied you with for your project meet the required energy efficiency rating.
